4.22 - Incipient Spin Recognition and Recovery

Required for Private: 14 CFR 61.105(b)(11)

Lesson Objective

During this lesson, the learner will learn to quickly react to recover from an unintentional spin. The learner will learn to recognize the events leading to a spin, and to recognize and recover from an incipient spin. Practicing spin training is not required for solo, private, commercial glider ratings.  However, it is required for the instructor rating. Knowledge of spins and spin recovery techniques are required by 14 CFR 61.105(b)(11) for private pilot and above.

Regulatory Requirement

Pre-Solo pilot (Student Pilot and Transition Pilots):
Private Pilot Test Candidate:  14 CFR 61.105(b)(11)

Content

  • Some gliders are easier to spin than others.  Some gliders may not spin easily with a student and instructor on-board, but behave differently when the same glider is flown solo.
  • Importance of Weight and Balance relative to spin susceptability.
  • skidding versus slipping turns and spin susceptability
  • Some gliders have a different recovery technique.  Be familiar with your glider's spin recovery technique!

Completion Standard

The learner will be able to explain the events leading to a spin, and can consistently recognize and recover from an incipient spin.
