4.21 - Chandelle

Lesson Objective

During this lesson, the learner will learn to perform the chandelle, a steep climbing turn.  it is used by glider pilots to transition betwee cruising and thermalling flight. Note: this procedure is not requred by any FAA regulations for glider training.

Pre-Solo pilot (Student Pilot and Transition Pilots): None 
Private Pilot Test Candidate: None

Content

  • Check for traffic
  • pull-up from high-speed cruise into a steep-climbing turn

Completion Standard

The learner will be able to quickly transition between high-speed cruising flight and low-speed circling at the desired airspeed within 10 knots and the desired bank angle with 10 degrees.
