4.17 - Forward Slip

Lesson Objective

During this lesson, the learner will learn how to steepen the glider slope without increasing the airspeed.  A forward slip can also be used in the unlikely event that the airbrakes fil to operate. This lesson practices entering and recovering from a forward slip at altitude.

Pre-Solo pilot (Student Pilot and Transition Pilots): 14 CFR 61.87(i)(17)
Private Pilot Test Candidate: 14 CFR 61.107(b)(6)(iv)

Content

  • Entering the forward slip with ailerons and opposite rudder
  • Recovery from the forward slip by neutralizing the controls

Completion Standard

The learner will be able to use a forward slip to adjust the glide slope, while maintaining a specified heading of +/- 10 degrees, and maintaining a specified airspeed of +10/-5 knots.
