4.16 - Side Slip - Compensating for a Crosswind

Lesson Objective

During this lesson, the learner will learn how compensate for a crosswind with a side slip, especially on touchdown, in order to prevent side-loads on the landing wheel.

Private Pilot Test Candidate: 14 CFR 61.107(b)(6)(iv)

Content

  • slipping with adequate bank angle to overcome a crosswind
  • maintaining the nose direction with the end of the runway
  • keeping the glider over the centerline of the runway

Completion Standard

The learner will be able to compensate for a crosswind using a slip, maintaining specified heading within 10 degrees, and maintaining a specified airspeed with +10/-5 knots.
